The Turkish Van cats are an ancient breed from the Lake Van area of Turkey. They are said to be one of the one of the oldest cat breeds, probably over a thousand years old. The Vans are a naturally occuring breed and tend to be very healthy with no known disease tendancies or genetic defects.
The Turkish Vans have medium-long hair and a big brushy tail. In the warmer months the body has a shorter coat while in the winter it will be longer. The tail is full and brushy year round. Their coat is very soft with a cashmere like feel yet is easy to maintain. It has only 1 length, rarely mats and will stay looking nice with occasional brushing.
The Vans are white with markings in black, blue, red, cream or tortie and white. They must have a colored tail and at least one head marking, but can have additional body spots as long as the color is on no more than 20% of the body. Their eyes can be amber, blue or odd(one of each).
The Turkish Van is an active, atletic and intelligent breed that loves to play, even as an adult. They are known for their love of water and some are said to swim when given the chance. The sink, the bathtub and water glasses are considered fair game! They interact with and bond strongly to their owners.
Turkish Van cats can be blue and white(above), tortie and white (right top) and red and white(bottom right)
